How Tax Professionals Can Register as EROs with the IRS

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires all tax professionals who want to electronically file tax returns to register as an Electronic Return Originator (ERO). Once approved as an ERO, the IRS assigns the practitioner an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN). To register as an ERO, tax professionals must complete and submit Form 8633, “Application to Participate in the IRS e-file Program.” Along with this form, an official IRS fingerprint card must be submitted. It’s crucial to use the IRS’s official fingerprint card, as the IRS won’t accept cards in any other format.
